Don't miss the photos from our 40th Reunion.
Second scholarship awarded Esther Ng is the second CHS student to receive a Class of 1965 scholarship. Esther graduated 8th in her class. She was involved in band and orchestra and culinary arts, as well as other school and community activities. She plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin.
More Scholarship News Thanks to your generosity, our scholarship corpus now is almost $100,000.
Here's what that means: each year our class will award up to three $1,500 scholarships ($750 a semester) to Central High graduates. This will continue forever, as the corpus of the fund is never spent, only the earnings.
Since the fund earns better than the guaranteed return on the corpus, there will be enough money to accommodate increasing costs of post-high school education (probably an increase to $1000 a semester in a few years).
Everyone pat yourself on the back. When you have finished patting, write a check. Any amount will help and make you feel good.
Your check should be made to: San Angelo Area Foundation, SACHS Class of 65 Scholarship
Send to: San Angelo Area Foundation 2201 Sherwood Way, Suite 205 San Angelo, TX 76901
--- News about our first recipient
Our scholarship fund awarded its first scholarship 5-22-2006) to Brian Jones, who now attends Texas A&M.
The scholarship will pay Brian $750 a semester for eight long semesters, as long as he stays in school and maintains a 2.5 GPA.
In addition, the San Angelo Area Foundation awarded Brian a San Angelo Rotary Club scholarship that provides Brian with an additional $500 a semester -- combined with our Class of 65 scholarship, Brian will receive $1250 a semester as he earns a degree at A&M.
Brian is majoring in child psychology/pre-dental.
Brian is a Presidential Academic Excellence Award winner, a member of the National Honor Society, student council for four years, and was junior class president. He played on the varsity soccer team for four years and was team captain his senior year. He was named all-district in soccer and was Central's most valuable player his senior year.
Brian has been active in many worthwhile causes: he organized a blood drive at Central, works at the Wesley United Methodist Church soup kitchen, works with disabled children as a West Texas Rehab Center summer camp counselor, and organized a drive with the Salvation Army to distribute school supplies to needy children.
Brian's GPA is 96.63, ranking him 62nd in Central's 2006 class of 648 students.
In his scholarship application, Brian said of his goals and aspirations: "I want the life of my parents."
Brian's mother is a nurse at San Angelo Community Medical Center and has a second job as a nurse with VistaCare Hospice; his father was a dentist who died unexpectedly of a brain hemorrhage three years ago.
What a difference our class will make in the life of this fine young man. I hope each of you walks a little taller today as a result of your contribution to his future.
